Reminiscing About My Neighbor

I’ ve been reminiscing about a neighbor, rest his soul. When
the neighbors came to shivaree them, he, rather than
‘treat’ had to be thrown into the creek.

Dad had got too tired of threshing so we (my brothers and I)
took the run. Horn, I’ll call him, remarked, ‘I ain’t
gonna have no damn kids thresh for me!’ Well, we threshed all
around him. No one would come in for the one little job at his
place. Maybe out of loyalty to us. So we wound up with his little
job. My brother, Lloyd, would not penalize him either. When his
Fordson wouldn’t start any more he walked 2? miles with the
coils and had Vernon put in new points. With no testing equipment
one set the points by putting the coil in another model T.

Later he had a 12-20 T. C. He got along good with it. One of our
12-20’s gave us fits. A bee got into the fuel line! You could
blow it back and it would run good until it got back in. When I
flushed the tank it was in the switch valve.

This good neighbor was heard to remark, ‘They don’t know
how to run it!’

The rig we used was a 28-46 (?) WS and a 20-40 Case. Later a 20
HP Case steam and then a 45 Mogul on a 32′ Rumely.

But the fondest remembrance was when we used the 27-44 T.C. No
water hauling any more, no engineer, steady cheap power using 1/3
the fuel, easy starting and fast.

I love to play with steam engines. I have an 80 or 85 double
N.S., an 80 Case and a model the size of a Ford-son, and about 50
gas. I am restoring a 1924 model TT Ford Truck. It will be a fuel
delivery truck. Wish I could paint it some other color, you have to
be too fussy with black paint. It will have 4 transmissions,
distributor ignition and, oh yes, solid tires behind!

Enjoyed page 14 of the December issue about an 8 N Ford. I was
surprised to see 19′ tires on it. As we had no 8 N’s here
with 400-19 I had to get out the parts book to check it. The
16′ wheels were extra.

Hope to go to Rollag’s show. See you there!
