Solomon Rees has been collecting engines since he was 9 years old.

Q: How long have you been collecting gas engines?

A: I’ve been collecting gas engines since I was 9 years old.

Q: What attracted you to the hobby?

A: There was a Briggs & Stratton Model WMB engine in the back of our barn, and I restored it all by myself.

Q: Who else in your family collects engines?

A: My father also collects engines.

Q: What engines do you have in your collection?

A: I have 10 engines in my collection: Briggs & Stratton Models WMB, Y, ZZ, WI, 6S, 5S on a Planet Jr., A and 61102, a Fairbanks-Morse and a Wisconsin ABN.

Q: What is your favorite engine in your collection?

A: My favorite engine is my Briggs & Stratton WMB because I restored it myself.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?

A: I am trying to work on my Briggs & Stratton Model Y, which I need parts for. But it runs great!

Q: Which shows do you normally attend each year?

A: I go to the Pioneer Engineers’ Reunion (Rushville, Ind.), the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Show (Portland, Ind.), and the Franklin County Antique Machinery Show (Brookville, Ind.). I would like to go to Maumee Valley Antique Steam & Gas Assn. show (New Haven, Ind.).

Q: What are your favorite engines and why?

A: I like hit-and-miss engines because they run great.

Q: If money weren’t an issue, what is your dream engine to own?

A: It would be a Briggs & Stratton water-cooled Model NPW-102.
