Reece McLean, Lenoir, N.C., passed away June
21, 2003, after a brief bout with pneumonia and other
complications. Reece, a longtime member of the Carolina Flywheelers
Engine Club of Boone, N.C., was 66 years old. He was a United
States Army Veteran, retired machine operator and of the Baptist
faith. Reece was a fine man, very humble and a willing helper. He
enjoyed coon hunting, raising apples, looking for ginseng and
working with his small engines. He was also very devoted to his
family. Surviving is his wife, Mabel; son Walter; and two
grandchildren, David and Bridgette.

Alvin L. Warrington, 86, of Arlington Heights,
Ill., died Jan. 25, 2003. He was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Hampshire,
Kane County, Ill.
Alvin grew up on a dairy farm north of Hampshire where he
learned how to fix just about anything. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Navy, serving six years during World War II in the North
Atlantic, Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean Seas. He ended his career as
a Chief Motor Machinist Mate. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post
981, Arlington Heights, and was a retired employee of Material
Service.
Alvin’s hobby was repairing old gas engines, and he was a
member of the Northern Illinois Steam Power Association and the
Stephenson County Antique Engine Club, attending annual shows where
he exhibited his 1943 Willys Model MB Jeep and Ml00 trailer that he
purchased in Capua, Italy, at the end of his military career. He
drove the Jeep in many local parades and enjoyed reminiscing about
his Navy career.
Alvin’s final wish was for the Jeep to be donated to a
museum, and in April four of his children and his brother, Dean,
delivered the jeep and trailer to The Navy Museum in Washington,
D.C., where it will be part of a display that will include World
War II Landing Craft and Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP).
Survivors include his wife, Mary (Burke) Warrington; his former
wife Angela (Cassara) Warrington, and their seven children; Mary
Warren, Jack Warrington, Rose Fonter, Alva Kreutzer, Alan
Warrington, Lillian Warrington and Anna Slubowski, 15 grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Dean, Lloyd, Roy and
Gene and his sister, Marian Bohl.
