526 West High Street Portland, Indiana 47371

PORTLAND – Officers and members of the Tri-State Gas Engine and
Tractor Association, Inc., held their annual meeting here at the
Immaculate Conception school and honors were paid to the club
president, WoodyTurner, and Joe Fahne-stock, writer for The Dayton
News and The Gas Engine Magazine.

Both men were presented plaques for their outstanding work in
making the 1969 show the largest in the middlewest. There were over
fifty antique tractors and more than 300 gas engines on display
with practically all of them running Saturday and Sunday of the
show. In addition there were 49 dealers for the flea market, a
museum of antique watches, Indian relics and numerous other antique
displays.

Registrations at the gate revealed that persons attended the
local show from eighteen states and came from 333 towns and cities
from the 18 different states. Fahnestock, in an illustrated story
in the November-December issue of The Gas Engine Magazine, stated
that the Portland show had the largest display ever for tractors
and gas engines.

At the meeting, the club bestowed the first presentation of
‘The Spark Plug of the Year’ on Fahnestock. This will be an
annual award of the group to the one whose efforts do the most in
promoting the event. Woody Turner, president of the Tri-State
group, was awarded a trophy for his outstanding leadership as
president of the group. Turner has already completed most of the
plans for the 1970 show which will be held at the Jay County
Fairgrounds August 21, 22 and 23. One innovation will be an old
fiddlers’ contest on Saturday the 22. The display of antique
tractors and gas engines is increasing each year and Turner expects
to have more than 60 tractors and 350-400 gas engines next August.
Other officers of the Tri-State group are Luther Breymier,
vice-president; Morris Titus, secretary-treasurer; Marion Ertle,
Harold Ary, Wayne Whitenack, Ted Yoder, Harold Wilburn and O. H.
‘Doc’ Schwanderman, directors. The club membership now is
more than 175 and come from six different states.

The Tri-State group presented the Altar-Rosary Society of the
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church a beautiful plaque in
appreciation of the group’s furnishing meals each Friday and
Saturday.

Woody Turner, President and Joe Fahnestock proudly display their
trophies. Eldrew D. Cissell, advertising director and public
