Stan Ellerbeck's 1869 12 HP Gibbs & Sterrett steam-to-gas conversion engine.

Stan Ellerbeck of Excelsior Springs, Mo., took on quite a project in 2008, converting an 1869 Gibbs & Sterrett box bed steam engine into a 12 HP gas engine with a Bessemer cylinder. Stan started the project in November 2007 and finished it just in time to show it at the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Assn. show in Portland, Ind., in August 2008.

Over the course of those nine months, Stan took hundreds of photos to document the process from start to finish. Below, you’ll find links to eight different photo galleries featuring Stan’s photos as well as some by Gas Engine Magazine. And if you haven’t yet, be sure to read the full story behind this incredible engine.
