Origin of Curious Gear System

I have this old gear system from P.M. Gundlach in Bellville, Illinois, dated 1892 that my brother gave me. I don’t know where he acquired it, but I’m curious about what kind of machine it went on and what that machine was used for. If you know any information about it, I would be grateful if anyone could curb my enthusiasm about this piece.
Thank you for your time and help.
