The ‘Otto Gas Engine Works’ is a company that has
roots-101 years old. It was started in 1876 by the introduction of
the ‘Otto’ gas engine, the first commercially successful
gas engine made in the U.S.A. I hope to write a full history of the
company and publish it in the G.E.M. I have the production records
of the company and all blueprints and available spare parts. There
were about 15,000 engines built and a little over 100 engines left
in existence to my knowledge. Engines were built from 1/3 to 300
HP, the largest with a 21′ bore and a 3-foot stroke. The
exhaust valve was about as big as a Maytag. That’s a lot of
iron tied up in just one engine!
