I first became interested in the Galloway Company history when I
restored my great-grandfather’s 7 HP Galloway saw rig. Since
then I have collected several original catalogs and a number of
copies of original literature. I also put out a request through ads
in GEM for anyone with Galloway engines to send me the serial
numbers of their engines along with any thing else that they might
know, such as the horsepower rating, manufacturing date (known
through an original receipt, instruction book, or certificate), air
or water cooled, etc. I did this because apparently all the
Galloway Company records have been lost and there are no known
serial number and manufacturing date lists in existence.
About forty kind owners have obliged me so far. I would like to
thank all the folks who have taken the time to write and provide me
with the information on their engines. This ongoing project would
not be possible without the cooperation of the individual Galloway
owners.
This list is by no means meant to be a complete representation
of serial numbers. However, you can gather some idea of dates of
manufacture from the few that are known. For instance, the
roundrods were replaced with cast crankshafts around 1915 along
with the introduction of the Masterpiece Six, as can be seen with
#27515. The list also raises questions about all the 7 HP engines
in the 40,000 number range. Were there more 7 HP engines made than
any other? Or, were they saved from the scrap drives because they
were too bulky to haul off? (Or too valuable on the farm to be let
go.) Also, in what order did Galloway assign serial numbers? It
would appear that they used them basically in numerical order with
a few exceptions. Were the numbers attached at the end of the
manufacturing process after the engine was tested, with some being
‘reassigned’ if that particular engine failed its test, or,
were they handed out in the shop to be attached hap -hazardly? And
why weren’t the Handy Andy engines given a serial number? (One
Handy Andy I saw had ‘AC1011’ stamped on the nameplate.) If
anyone has any ideas, please drop me a line.
One way or the other, I hope the list provides at least some
idea of when a particular Galloway engine was built. Hope fully I
can acquire more information as time goes on and other Galloway
owners share it with me. So if you own a Galloway engine or know of
one, please let me know all you can about it. Also, if anyone has
any original Galloway literature that I can copy, please let me
know that too.
