Here are three photos of my 3 HP Sattley. This engine appeared
in Reflections sometime ago. At that time I needed a governor. I
received two replies of help. My friend, Lowtar Kleinertz, went to
the Portland Show and found one that came from Canada and brought
it back. One big chunk of rust! But complete. After I reworked it,
I added a new push pin, spring and a brass bushing and it’s now
as good as new. Lowtar has several engines that he has restored. He
lives four blocks from me. Ha. Ha. So, I go to him for a helping
hand. I turned to Jack Ghere for some lathe work and how to do this
and that. Also, I had a lot of questions for Art Biage and Bud
Tocky. Thanks a lot, guys, you all were a world of help to me!
How I found the Sattley:
Chelsea and I were at the 1995 Southern Illinois Antique Power
Club, Antique Power Days Show in September. During the show a man
came by and sat down for a talk. His name was Virgle Kohrmann.
Before he left, he gave me his card and said to come and see him
that he had some engines he no longer needed. He only lives 20
miles from me so, about three months went by and, I called Virg and
went to see him. I looked at several engines and then he said,
‘I have one out back in the shed with my John Deere B. Someday,
but not today, you might like to have it.’ We looked at the
Sattley, a 3 HP gas and kerosene, serial 3030. Ha! No deal on it
today, but I went home with an IHC 2 HP LA, only needing paint and
decals. After Chelsea and I had the LA done and ready to show, I
went to see Virg in February of 1996. He was glad to see me and we
had a good engine talk and visit. We looked at the Sattley again.
Ha! Ha! I went home with no engines.
In May 1995, I called Virg again and told him I was going to
stop by for a visit. I hung up the phone, took my trailer and went
to see him. When I got there he had the Sattley and a cart behind
his John Deere out in his front yard. After a lot of talking he
finally said okay. But, he said that he wanted to see it run and to
be shown. He told his grandson to watch a grown man cry when it was
on the trailer ready to go to its new home, along with an FM Z
model D, 2 HP.
After the Sattley was done and on our trailer it was shown at
Salem, Illinois, at our Power Days Show in September 1996.
May I say thank you to a wonderful woman, Karen, my wife of 19
years. Thank you for sharing our hobby with Chelsea and me. We do
love you, too.
At the September show Karen, Chelsea , her friend Megan Neff and
I spent a great day with friends and engine buddies. Chelsea and
Megan and Joyce King, our club secretary, had their picture taken
using a hand corn sheller that Joyce used when she was a small
girl. This picture, along with more of the show, was published in
the Salem, Illinois, newspaper. Can anyone help me date my Sattley
engine and how was it pin striped?
Thank you all and thanks to GEM for a great magazine.
