Once again the show season is over in Oklahoma. We can tell this
because the 6th annual Route 66 Fly-wheelers Show in Catoosa is
history.
First, I will give a short history of our group. Our show was
started by Catoosa’s mayor, Curtis Conley, and a small group of
enthusiasts. What started as a small gathering held in conjunction
with a street festival has grown into a popular event by
itself.
The 1997 show was our best yet. We always have a great turnout,
but this year was above normal. Our great attendance could be
because of our location, a picnic ground between Oklahoma Route 66
and Historic Route 66. It could also have been because of a dry
weekend with temperatures in the upper 60s (the weather in
northeastern Oklahoma is always a coin toss this time of year).
We had well over one hundred engines, several tractors and many
collectible cars. Our group has never openly advertised for
tractors or cars, but we have always had a fair turnout. We would
like to have more of these exhibits. The restaurant across Historic
66 (this is the original two lane road) has allowed us the use of
their parking lot and field for this. We also have a small group of
arts and crafts and flea market vendors, with plenty of room for
expansion; there is no vendors fee.
There is usually a food vendor or two for the general public,
and Lil Abner’s Restaurant is right across the road. We sure
appreciate all of Lil Abner’s courtesy and use of their parking
lot through the years. As far as exhibitors are concerned, we have
a small group that likes to cook over an open fire nearly as much
as spinning flywheels. All of the beef, pork, beans and other
fixings that is cooked or smoked is donated by the exhibitors. We
usually even cook up some bacon, eggs and biscuits on Sunday
morning.
So, if you happen to be cruising down Route 66 with Tod and Buz
in their Corvette, or driving down the highway in your pickup and
wind up five miles east of Tulsa, on October 24 and 25, 1998, we
would love to have you stop in and exhibit or just say
‘Howdy.’ Our show is located at the gazebo on Historic
Route 66 in Catoosa, Oklahoma. For you out-of-towners, that’s
the intersection of Cherokee and Antry Streets.
