It is time to remind the GEM readers that 3 years ago on New
Years’ Eve, the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum in Vista
was broken into and about 6 tons of gas engines were stolen.
Two of the engines that disappeared were rare enough to be
easily traced. The rarest was a West Coast side-shaft 4 HP that was
the prototype of the many engines that West Coast made in San
Diego. It had hand-made nuts and bolts. The tag had no serial
number or HP rating. The other most easily recognized was a 15 HP
Doak side-shaft serial number CA 737. There are marks on those 2
units that can be identified. A reward is offered for recovery of
these gas engines.
