The annual Arizona Fly wheelers Engine Show was held in
Cottonwood, Arizona, February 13-14, 1993, hosted by Betty and
Graydon Gaudy, at their home near the banks of the Verde River. A
pot luck dinner was held Saturday night at the Gaudy’s, and was
attended by over 60 members and guests. It was a festive affair
with local members renewing friendships with out-of-towners,
discussing new acquisitions, future shows and trips.
Attending the two-day show were over 600 guests from 23 states,
plus Canada and Australia. Saturday weather was in the 50s but
sunny and dry Sunday was overcast with occasional light drizzle but
that did not dampen enthusiasm nor attendance.
All day Friday engines of all sizes and types arrived from
throughout the country, and continued coming until the start of the
show on Saturday morning. There were a total of 48 exhibitors
participating.
On display were 110 engines fully restored and operational, with
an estimated total of 1,073.032 HP. Included were three 60 HP
engines and one 80 HP three cylinder engine, one stationary steam
engine, two model steam engines, a steam tractor, and various
novelty type engines.
I here were several working exhibits powered by 1 to 5 HP gas
engines. A display of a grain grinder turning corn from coarse to a
fine meal was operating both days. An antique wooden dowel maker
delighted the crowds, including some very young, by changing the
shape of a inch wood square to a inch round rod in less than a
minute. Several water pumps were busy
pumping water all day long. A small rock crusher was kept busy
intermittently throughout the show changing the appearance of five
to ten pound rocks into gravel. The Eimco ‘Power Horse’, as
featured in the March issue of GEM, with the buckboard attached,
was offering rides to many of the young future flywheelers and all
the pretty girls!
All exhibitors were presented with a show button commemorating
the 1993 show by the Arizona Flywheelers. Everyone, well pleased
with the attendance of the show and the variety of the exhibits, is
now looking forward to the next event.
