The 18th Annual Sandwich Early Day Engine Club Gas Engine &
Tractor Show was held June 24 & 25, 1989 at the Sandwich
Fairgrounds, Sandwich, Illinois. While most everyone else had a
chance to enjoy the show, your reporter had a real nasty summer
cold which made the two days kind of a blur. Hopefully, I can get
together enough of a report to make this interesting.
After the heat of ’88, this year was a pleasure. With 172
exhibitors from eight states, we had a very good turn out of 300
engines of all sizes and makes. Tractors and models were up again
this year to 52 and the Model Corner continues to grow with 131
steam, 47 gas, and 15 hot air models for a total of 193.
Saturday morning we held a wagon backing contest under the
direction of Bill Crawford. While no one broke the wagon tongue, we
can see a need for practice. Our Exhibitor Tractor Pull on Saturday
afternoon once again drew a good turnout of tractors and admirers.
Also of note was a Slow Race directed by Brian Rigoni, Sunday
morning.
New this year was our Farm Toy Show. With a fair amount of
exhibitors and dealers we are planning on continuing this as a part
of our show. Gus Hanson was in charge of arrangements and did a
very good job. Our Old Time Style Show on Saturday afternoon was an
interesting diversion to be enjoyed. If time and the pocketbook
allowed the Flea Market was ready to help with collections and many
other opportunities.
Also new was a dance for members, exhibitors and friends on
Saturday night. I have some video tape of this that I plan to have
at the next show. Boy, did that rug get cut!
Our 19th annual show will be held June 23 & 24, 1990 at the
Sandwich Fairgrounds, Sandwich, Illinois. Due to insurance and
grounds regulations we will open for setup Friday at noon and
cannot allow campfires. Hope to see you all there and stop by our
registration tent and say hello.
