  • A PRICE GUIDE TO ANTIQUE TOOLS, 4TH EDITION

A price guide is only as helpful as its prices are current. With this in mind, the fourth edition of Herbert Kean's A Price Guide to Antique Tools takes its prices from the latest live and Internet auctions as well as private sales. Like previous editions, the guide includes more than 12,000 prices (individual and chart combinations) that represent extraordinary tools, as well as those found in flea markets.

There is an explanation for each tool group that allows the reader to judge the condition of a tool (the most critical of all factors when determining price). A chapter on American wooden planes covers more than 400 makers, each graded with a single value number … a system that is at the same time simple and comprehensive.

To help even more, almost every tool is illustrated with a photograph or line drawing. The section on Internet prices explains the mechanisms of electronic auctions and gives tips for successful bidding. If you have ever wished that you could consult with an expert before investing in a tool, this is the book for you. It puts at your fingertips the knowledge and expertise of noted tool collector and dealer Herb Kean, both in determining current prices and in evaluating condition.

  • AN INTERVIEW WITH HAROLD BROCK DVD

This conversation with one of the pre-eminent figures in farm tractor history features insights that could only be learned from being there. Harold Brock worked intimately with Henry Ford, Edsel Ford and Henry Ford Jr. He personally met Thomas Edison, Harry Ferguson and many other legends of modern invention and industry.

In this DVD, Harold talks about his days as a youth at the Ford Apprentice School and how that led to meeting and working with Henry Ford and being brought into the small engineering department shepherded by Mr. Ford. The conversation covers how Ford met Harry Ferguson and, perhaps more importantly, how the Ford design team ultimately dealt with Ferguson. Time is also spent talking about the history of Ford Motor Company and some of the key players like “Cast Iron” Charlie Sorensen, Eugene Farkas, George Sherman and other key engineers at Ford.

At 113 minutes, this DVD is almost two hours long, with supporting images from the N-News archives. The DVD includes a slideshow of additional Ford-related photos collected over the years. This is an excellent opportunity to hear about the historic development of the Ford N series tractors from a man who was at the center of it all.

  • BARN FIND ROAD TRIP

Great collector cars are still out there … just waiting to be found!

Sadly, there is little reality in reality TV. That wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that these shows are the only small-screen entertainment for the barn-find collector car aficionado.

Barn Find Road Trip is the antidote to all that. It's a real-world, barn-find banzai run in which auto archaeologist Tom Cotter, his car collector pal Brian Barr and photographer Michael Alan Ross embarked on a 14-day collector-car-seeking adventure with no predetermined destinations. It's barn-find freestyle! Roaming the Southeast, they documented their day-to-day car search in photos and through stories and interviews. This trip is absolutely real and the same kind of junket any gearhead with the skills, knowledge and time can undertake.

Cotter and company hit the road in Cotter's 1939 Ford Woody, the kind of car that opened doors and started the conversations that revealed where interesting cars were squirreled away. The result? The discovery of over 1,000 collector cars and some of the most amazing barn-find stories Cotter has yet unearthed, all accompanied by Ross' evocative photography. If you love stories of automotive adventure, this is the book for you!
