Instructions for Installing Either Type BAO or 1922 Bosch Magneto on Witte, Type 'W' Meco and Other Stationary Engines Made by the Witte Engine Co., of Kansas City, Mo.
The sketch shows you the location of all parts of the fitting and the table gives you the exact location of the two holes for carrying the magneto bracket fastening screws. These holes should be drilled and tapped for 3/8'-16 U. S. Standard thread.
Engines of the types mentioned, having a serial number under 20,000, must have the holes for the magneto bracket fastening screws drilled and tapped, and require a new cam gear in addition to the magneto fittings. Be sure to order this gear when you equip one of the engines, stating the horse-power and number of the engine.
Engines having serial number from 20,001 to 46,000 require no changes or mechanical work, other than the drilling and tapping of the two holes for the magneto bracket fastening screws.
Engines whose serial number is 46,000 and up all have their engine beds drilled and tapped for the Bosch magneto fittings.

Installation: After mounting the bracket, remove the governor flywheel and turn engine over until the gears are meshing with the marked teeth in position as shown in cut so that you will be absolutely sure of correct mesh and timing when large gear is replaced. Loosen the nut on the inner end of the gear shaft and slip the large gear and shaft assembly off. Then remove the entire battery ignition system, taking off the two pins which you will find directly to the rear of the shaft of the large gear.
Put trip rod spring No. 126 in position on the trip rod and place the end of the trip rod in the guide of the bracket with the trip yoke No. 121 in position over the boss on the engine bed, thru which the large gear shaft passes. Adjust the magneto bracket and trip rod so that the rod works easily back and forth and does not bind.
Next, replace the large gear making sure that the teeth are meshed in the proper position with the markings before mentioned. Put nut on the gear shaft and tighten it. Then mount the magneto on its bracket. The magneto, bracket and trip rod must be so lined up that the trip rod does not bind in its guide and the trip finger hits the trip lever squarely. Roll fly wheel forward until the large gear is in the position shown in the illustration. The adjusting nuts on the trip rod should be set so that when the gear comes to this position, the magneto trips according to the horse-power size. Put the governor fly-wheel back in place with the hub against the crank gear and drive the fly-wheel key in securely.
Set the crank in the position shown for the size engine being timed, being careful to have it on the compression or firing stroke. Next, be sure that the trip finger No. 123 is behind the magneto trip lever, pushing it partly over toward the tripping point.
Now adjust the entire trip rod with the trip finger and its carrier toward the magneto trip by unscrewing the nut toward the cam on the trip rod and screwing on the nut next to the magneto side of the trip yoke, which operation will move the whole rod and trip finger toward the magneto. Be careful to see that the trip finger and its carrier are kept in a vertical position during this adjustment, so that the tripping edges of the magneto trip lever and the trip finger are parallel to maintain even wear on both fingers. Magneto should trip when punch mark on fly-wheel, 'Igniter Fires,' is level with top of hopper.
Checking Time of Spark: To check time of spark and operation of spark plug, unscrew the plug and lay it on the mixer top, turn the engine over slowly to the tripping point and observe the spark across the points of the plug. Be sure the spark points of the plug are the proper distance apart. Correct width of spark plug gap is from 1/50 to 1/32 of an inch.
Starting Bosch Magneto-Equipped Engines: Engines fitted with magneto should be started by the back-kick method only. No starter crank should be used on any size fitted with oscillating magneto, as these have a fixed spark and no late spark adjusting lever. The back-kick method is much easier and no danger is encountered from the back-kick as it would be in using a starter crank. Proceed as follows: 1st, raise lubricator trip to feed oil to cylinder; 2nd, hold down on air valve, and turn flywheel over by hand in direction engine runs until magneto snaps, then stop. Piston will then be at its inmost position; 3rd, open fuel throttle, from one to two turns according to size of engine, and close starting damper about three-fourths. This damper is located in air heater elbow on kerosene engines, and on outer flange of mixer on gasoline engines. Prime engine with gasoline from squirt can thru spring priming valve, inserting end of can spout in valve and pushing it down as far as it will go. Cold weather requires more priming than warm weather and a warm engine less than a cold one; 4th, roll fly-wheel forward quickly until piston is farthest out with crank below outer center; 5th, now grasp opposite spokes or rim of fly-wheel. Turn wheel backward quickly, forcing piston back into cylinder until magneto snaps. The compressed charge of gas will then be fired by the magneto and engine driven forward in its regular operation; 6th, open starting damper and adjust fuel throttle to its proper position, where engine gives most power on fewest explosions and shows no black smoke from exhaust.
If Engine Does Not Start First Time, throw it back against compression once or twice until the magneto trip snaps, and if it does not start then, shut off the fuel and blow out old charge by rolling piston back against compression, at the same time holding inlet valve open with the left hand. Then reprime and go thru the starting operation again, taking care not to flood the engine this time.
Magneto Oiling: While running, a light oil should be used on the yoke roller operated by the cam on the engine, also on the yoke. Oil the push finger pin, the push rod guide on the bracket, and the spring ends of the magneto. Oil only the above points on the magneto operating mechanism. The type BAO Bosch magneto requires no oil for its bearings. The type 1922 Bosch magneto requires a couple of drops each time the engine is run. Do not over oil the 1922 Magneto.
