The Mercedes Livestock Show celebrated its Golden Anniversary this year, March 15-19. Primarily dedicated to livestock, rodeos, carnivals, and the general aspects of entertainment, it has been a star in the array of annual events regularly staged in the Rio Grande Valley. Four years ago H. E. Vogel had the inspiration of putting together an accumulation of old farm machinery as a part of the show. His dedicated efforts have seen this antique equipment display grow in every aspect. This year there were over one hundred exhibitors who displayed their old iron to an excess of 25,000 spectators. The antique machinery display is a genuine crowd attraction.

During the last weekend of February, C. K. Koelle staged a John Deere show on North Shary Road, Mission. At this time a general meeting of interested persons was convened by Herb Vogel to form a group dedicated to perpetuate memories of farm living and equipment from the past. Thus the Rio Grande Valley Old Farm Equipment Club was spawned. God willing, this new organization will celebrate its Golden Anniversary with the Mercedes Livestock Show Centennial.
