40 HP Superior Gas Engine In the Wild

| October/November 2010

I found this 40 HP Superior antique gas engine while on a service call in northeast Texas. It is sitting inside a white board fence not more than 100 feet off Highway 271. I have no idea how it ended up there as there is nothing in the area that would use an engine that big.

It is a 2-stroke with a flyball governor connected to the gas mixer, operated by a sideshaft. The only thing I can see that is missing from the engine is the ignition system.

I have not been able to find out anything about it as every time I go up to see it, there is no one around to ask. This, I think, is a unique engine, as I have never seen a 2-stroke with that governor setup before. It should be some restorers dream.
