I have a 1-1/2 HP Sattley, serial number 69482, that has been rescued from a curbside trash pile and then turned into yard art. The new owner’s wife didn’t want it around anymore when they moved into a new home, so I’m giving the engine a new home.
I have tried to find information on it in C.H. Wendel’s American Gasoline Engines Since 1872 but so far, no luck, as there was very little information on the Sattley line. I have another Sattley, made by Nelson Bros., but that wasn’t shown in the book either.
I looked to see if other manufacturers may have made this one. It has the typical solid flywheels, with a hole and built-in handcrank on one. The inboard side of the other flywheel has raised letters and a pointer on the hub that shows exhaust open and exhaust close, but no casting numbers.
It has a square hopper, raised lip, single casting (numbered 2NF103), cylinder hopper and main bearings with a squared, box-like oil catch basin. The cam/governor gear is mounted on the outside of the main casting between the flywheel and the casting. The main bearing caps are held in place with four inverted square-head bolts that go through the base with nuts instead of studs.
The ignition is pipe plug, hit-and-miss, and the WICO EK magneto bracket bolts to the side of the base. It has a gas only mixer. Most of the castings have the letters “NF” before the numbers and a few have “A2” as the first two digits. The bottom of the water hopper has two freeze plugs, no drain hole, and water drains through head.
